About the Recipe

A classic bowl of oatmeal with berries is a fantastic, nutrient-dense way to start the day. Here is a versatile recipe that balances the creaminess of the oats with the natural tartness of the fruit.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • Oats: ½ cup rolled oats (old-fashioned)

  • Liquid: 1 cup liquid (water, almond milk, or coconut milk work well)

  • Berries: ½ cup fresh or frozen berries (blueberries, raspberries, or sliced strawberries)

  • Texture & Healthy Fats: 1 tbsp chia seeds or chopped walnuts

  • Flavor: ½ tsp cinnamon and a pinch of sea salt

  • Optional: A splash of vanilla extract or a drizzle of almond butter

Preparation

  1. Simmer: In a small saucepan, combine the oats, liquid, cinnamon, and salt. Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.

  2. Cook: Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 5–7 minutes. The oats should be creamy and have absorbed most of the liquid.

  3. Incorporate Berries: If using frozen berries, stir them into the pot during the last minute of cooking to warm them through. If using fresh berries, save them for the topping to keep them firm.

  4. Finish: Remove from heat and stir in your chia seeds or nuts. Pour into a bowl and top with the remaining berries.

Variations

  • Overnight Oats: For a no-cook version, mix the oats, liquid, and chia seeds in a glass jar. Let it sit in the refrigerator overnight. Top with berries in the morning.

  • Savory Twist: Omit the cinnamon and berries; top the oats with a soft-boiled egg, avocado slices, and a dash of black pepper.

  • Baked Version: Combine ingredients in a small oven-safe dish and bake at 180°C for 20 minutes for a cake-like consistency.

Tips For Success

Tip: If you prefer a lower-glycemic option, use steel-cut oats. They take longer to cook (about 20 minutes) but offer a heartier, nuttier texture and a slower release of energy.
